Abstract
This course is an introduction to literary analysis. The work on the program is the novel L'Étranger(1942), by Albert Camus (1913-1960).Addressed to students with a B2 French language level (cf. independent / advanced user), this course has five components. After having given an overview of the author's socio-intellectual background (Part I), we take a look at the novel’s profile (II): its genesis, publication, reception, influences, title, structure and chronology. The third part considers the novel’s plot, setting, characters, point of view, imagery, style, and themes. By questioning and examining the themes' meaning from details revealed by the story, we then propose (Part IV) different possible readings of the novel (e.g. sociological, philological, philosophical, biographical, political). The last part presents the modernity of the work in terms of cinema, comics, music and literature.
