This study is an attempt at comprehending the language in education dilemma in south Africa. It has been suggested that literature be used in the development of home language education curricula. Independent research conducted for this thesis has led to the notion that educationdisadvantages created during the colonial and apartheid eras continue to restrainc educators and students alike. to combat these legacies, the current grammar-based African language learner texts would be infused with African literature.en_ZA
