A number of African countries have made attempts to officially recognize traditional healers as health care providers and South Africa is no exception. South Africa has made substantial progress in officially recognizing traditional medicine and its integration into the primary healthcare system. The Traditional Health Practitioners Bill and the draft policy on African Traditional Medicine are examples of this. However, there is limited data on traditional healers and their practices specifically for mental health concerns. This thesis attempts to address this gap by conducting four separate studies.en_ZA
