Abstract
On the surface it would appear that the Government's intention to attract more members to medical schemes has not been successful as hoped, with membership remaining relatively constant but with an increase shift in the profile of most schemes. More specifically, the 18 to 35 year old population appears to be increasingly reluctant to participate in medical schemes. It has become ever more difficult to attract and retain these members and it seems that the needs of this particular segment are not being met. Due to this apparent lack of both understanding and the meeting of the needs of this segment, the outcome of an investigation into the perceptions, attitudes and needs of these members, together with what motivates these segments, requires closer analysis. The intention of this study is to improve customer loyalty within this segment.
