National Science Week Posters

dc.description.abstractThese colourful and delightfully visual posters can be printed out and used in the classroom as a resource for teachers, learners and educators. The Science Faculty Marketing Committee has for the last 4 years designed and produced posters to stimulate an interest in and curiosity about Science among primary school learners. The posters are designed and created by scientists from the 13 departments in the Faculty of Science and the production and printing of the posters is funded by a Grant from SAASTA (South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement). The aim of the bright, interactive posters is to create a resource for teachers to use in their classrooms and to provide stimulus material to inspire curious minds about Science in the learners. This year the topics of the posters are: Metal Making the Past: A Cultural and Scientific View of looking for raw materials, changing ore into metal and making metal into objects Evolution: the process of evolution by natural selection and a view of commonly held misconceptions about evolution The Secret Life of Viruses: What are viruses? How do they replicate? How they invade living cells and hijack their building blocks and the cure for viruses. In addition to producing the posters this year, we have converted some of the previous posters into A4 flyers to distribute at public places such as libraries, municipalities, etc in order to provide input for the general public. Previous posters produced for National Science Week are as follows: 1. Our Place in the Universe by Tony Fairall 2. History of Life on Earth by Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan 3. The Rocks of Table Mountain by John Compton 4. The Chemistry of Colour by Susan Bourne 5. Fascinating Nano World by Margit Harting 6. When I speak on my cellphone, where does my voice go? by Gary Marsden 7. Statistics of Growth and Life Expectancy by Tim Dunne 8. Climate Change by Mike Lucas 9. Plants Can Tell Time by Laura Roden 10. Number Old and New by John Webb 11. Journey from the Centre of the Earth by David Reiden_ZA
