- ItemOpen AccessImproving performance in a second year chemistry course: An evaluation of a tutorial scheme on the learning of chemistry(2005) Davidowitz, Bette; Rollnick, MarissaThroughput of students is a concern for academic departments especially since it will be the basis of a new funding formula for tertiary institutions. In order to reduce content for increased mastery, and ensure student engagement with chemical concepts, tutorials were introduced for two of the second year chemistry sub-disciplines at UCT in the place of some formal lectures. The impact of this innovation was investigated using questionnaires, interviews and a study of opportunistic data such as examination results. Analysis of the data showed that the overall pass rate increased noticeably as did the number of students achieving high marks. Student, tutor and lecturer feedback lent credence to the belief that the improvement was largely due to the introduction of the tutorial scheme. In addition, some noteworthy differences between the sub-disciplines were identified. Some of these differences were attributed to the lecturer’s understanding of his own teaching.
- ItemOpen AccessPLUS tutorials with complementary Skills Development Lectures(2014-07-15) Duthie, Shawn; Tonkin, Caitlin; Moody, Daniel; Vika, Lutho;These materials are used in a second year Political Studies class to continue a students' skills development. A continuation from the first year PLUS tuts, these tutorials are linked with Skills Development Lectures (SDLs). The SDLs teach the skills to student in a mandatory lecture for all students and these skills are then practically applied with those in the PLUS tutorials. These materials are an ideal starting point for those looking to teach academic skills to their students, via the Skills Development Lectures, and then to review and practically apply the skill in a smaller tutorial setting. Lecturers are encouraged to modify the materials with their own course content to make it more applicable and relevant to students. The materials are separated into one PLUS handbook for tutors and a folder with the SDLs which contain lectures notes and Powerpoint slides.
- ItemOpen AccessSelected student architectural technology projects(2011) Sanya, TomThe underpinning pedagogical idea is that architectural technology is part of this hierarchical framework: conceptualising (architectural concept)-structuring (structural system)-placement and layering (components)-detailing (connections). The projects presented here demonstrate that in this framework, students can acquire competencies that enable them to inextricably interlink architectural technology to the entire building and its spatial-aesthetics.
