Abstract
This dissertation is concerned with a comparative study of the relationships between the contrapuntal language of J.S. Bach, as evinced in the Well-Tempered Clavier, and fugues for the piano by selected Romantic composers. The research involves a preliminary investigation into the decline of Bach's music in the Classical era and the resurgence thereof in the Romantic era.
