The lack of patient care and utilisation data impairs the ability of hospital and clinic administrators to make informed, data-driven policy choices. This concern is particularly acute with HIV/AIDS, given both the striking growth in the local epidemic over the last two years and the high level of HIV-related health expenditures shouldered by the provincial medical system in the Western Cape province of South Africa. A retrospective chart review was conducted to capture clinical and utilisation data of from a sample of 59 inpatients, who were admitted to a township secondary hospital near Cape Town, South Africa during 1997. Three years of data were abstracted and analysed.en_ZA
