Croup is a common respiratory illness that has been recognized for many years. Despite recent advances in the utilization of steroids to treat the condition, it remains a significant cause of morbidity in children. In the developing world it may also remain a significant cause of mortality. Despite comprehensive descriptions of the disease process, its aetiological agents and clinical course, there are very few descriptions of the mechanics of breathing in croup. In addition there are very few methods described of measuring the severity of airway obstruction in patients with croup.en_ZA
