Abstract
This dissertation is a critical survey of Debussy's attitude to the nineteenth century single movement structure of the etude. The analyses of selected etudes from Debussy's set of twelve Etudes for solo piano attempts to illustrate the nature of this attitude and furthermore, an investigation is done into a possible analogy between two specific etudes of Chopin and Debussy.
