This study aims at exploring the professional experiences of black psychologists as victims of racism and in view of the profession's association with racist ideological practices. The review of the literature revealed that little research has been done in this area. An historical overview of the significant influences which shaped the professionalisation of South African psychology serves as background to the study. It is demonstrated with respect to historical background, that the profession had strong links with the implementation and maintenance of Apartheid policies. This development is followed through to a description of the recent controversy which has culminated into the formation of two alternative tendencies in the profession. The interview method was used to collect data and twenty registered black psychologists in the Western Cape area were approached to participate in the study. The findings are presented with respect to personal background and in the various categories of professional training.en_ZA
