dc.description.abstractA thesis is presented on the efficacy of the residential energy efficient lighting initiative, as part of the demand-side management in a rural village of Hlomendlini in the Eastern Cape. The focus of this thesis is to identify barriers of implementing CFLs in the South African context, with the aim of finding ways of removing the barriers. It attempts to understand the drivers, both in theory and in practise, of efficient lighting initiatives in South Africa and globally, as well as lessons learned. It explores the impacts of CFLs at the household level in terms of household budget and general quality of life especially to poor people. The assessment of the CFL initiative in Hlomendlini provides a unique window of how energy efficiency measures up to sustainable development in practice.en_ZA
