This dissertation utilises certain aspects of the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein to explore W.G. Sebald's representation of history in his novel Austerlitz (2001). Wittgenstein is explicitly mentioned in the text of the novel; this dissertation argues that his philosophy can help us to understand Sebald's project of restoring the past through literary engagement.en_ZA
