Pox viruses have been demonstrated in over 60 types of wild and exotic birds as well as domestic birds. Avipox viruses have been isolated and characterised from fowls, quails, canaries, parrots and lovebirds. This work describes the first isolation of a poxvirus from Jackass penguins (Spheniscus dermersus) and the characterisation of the virus as a separate species of penguinpox virus.en_ZA
