dc.description.abstractDuring the early part of the 20th century blood transfusion became a mainstay of clinical practice. The benefit of blood transfusion in surgery, as well as in other clinical settings, as was assumed, and blood transfusion was viewed as relatively risk free. Many advances in the treatment of patients especially in the field of surgery would have been impossible without the availability of blood products.
