Abstract
Thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy can safely be performed under local and/or regional anaesthesia. It is useful in low resource centers when safe general anaesthesia is not available, or when patients are unsuitable for general anaesthesia. It is also performed in developed world centers especially for minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Patient selection is however important.
Advantages of local and/or regional anaesthesia include:
•Quicker and cheaper
•Can monitor voice and breathing during surgery
•Does not require anaesthetist (although preferred)
•Avoids risks of general anaesthesia
•Favorable for day case surgery
