One of the most serious consequences of pediatric HIV infection is its impact on the central nervous system (CNS). Children born with HIV may present with cognitive abnormalities within a few months or years of birth. However, there is a group of children known as ‘slow progressors’ or asymptomatic children who do not exhibit typical symptoms of HIV and are consequently not put onto Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). The study sought to explore the cognitive and behavioural profiles of asymptomatic HAART-naïve children in comparison to a matched HIV-negative control group. Results suggest that Asymptomatic HAART-naïve children do experience some underlying CNS impairments and behavioural difficulties that need to be taken into account so that the appropriate services can be made available for their proper care and management.en_ZA
