Abstract
A vegetation survey of the Piketberg has been undertaken. with the aim of laying the basis for a more detailed survey. The mountain ranges from 300 m to 1500 m and lies near the north-western edge of the Cape Fynbos. The vegetation was classified using the phytosociological methods of the Zurich- Montpellier school. Vegetation forms were described with particular attention to the vegetation continua within the groups. Extensive data were collected on climatic and edaphic factors, and these were correlated to the vegetation forms and continua. This, it is hoped, will create the frame- work for the study of the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of the system. A check-list was compiled, and the flora analysed and compared to other known floras.
