This dissertation describes a numerical investigation into the tactical advantages offered by upgrading a hypothetical aircraft with a newer engine model. The airframe is largely based on the Dassault Mirage III, and the engines are based on the SNECMA Atar 9k50 and M53. A brief overview of recent developments in combat aircraft design and engine performance is provided which illustrates the trend towards high thrust to weight ratio aircraft engines with lower fuel consumption.en_ZA
