This thesis is a consolidation of work that investigates the flaw detection capabilities of Acoustic Emission (AE) technology applied to metal alloys and composite materials. The thesis explores the background to AE and how it is applied to flaw detection and fracture characterisation. In preliminary tests, a steel pressure vessel and a filament wound composite pressure vessel were used in hydro proofing tests. Each of the vessels had existing flaws/defects in them. The locations of these flaws were known. Acoustic emission sensors were placed on the surface of the vessels, the vessels were subjected to a pressurising programme, and the AE equipment was used in order to confirm the locations of these flaws.en_ZA
