Abstract
This dissertation uses theory derived from empirical infant research to illustrate the role of ongoing patterns of self- and mutual regulation in the formation of new expectations and organising principles - that is new psychic structure. Views on the nature of psychic structure and the process of structure formation, are considered from the perspectives of self psychology, intersubjectivity theory and the findings of infant research.
