    An exploration of the impact of students' prior genre knowledge on their constructions of 'audience' in a Marketing course at a postgraduate level.

    This article explores the development of audience awareness for two English additional language (EAL) graduate students making the transition from undergraduate Social Science disciplines into the professional discipline of Marketing at a South African university. The article examines the ways in which their conceptualisations of 'audience' shape their negotiation of the generic move structure informing a dominant genre within the discipline: the written case analysis. I argue that the students' struggle with realising the communicative purposes of the genre in their analyses has implications for how they engage with disciplinary theory within crucial moves. Data yielded by semi-structured interviews, reflection papers, as well as selected case analyses written by the students in the initial months of their postgraduate year illustrate how this struggle can be traced to a mismatch between their embodied understandings of the concept of 'audience' which are transported from undergraduate learning contexts, and 'audience' as prescribed by the communicative purpose of the written case analysis within a professional discipline. In making this argument, the article examines the ways in which an antecedent genre, the Social Science argumentative essay, contributes to this mismatch. The article concludes by outlining the pedagogical implications of the findings from an ESP perspective.

    The barriers and enablers to South African SMEs entering the circular economy

    Purpose - In the linear economy (LE) natural resources are extracted, used to make products and services and are then discarded. This model has two key limitations: firstly, the LE relies on natural resources, which are finite, and the LE generates a significant amount of waste. The proposed solution is switching from a LE to a circular economy (CE), where energy and materials are used repeatedly. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are significant contributors to the global economy and are faced with unique challenges. Understanding what factors are most influential in determining the successful transition of South African SMEs from the LE to the CE was the primary objective of the present study. Methodology - The study adopted a quantitative research approach. Through the deployment an online survey, a questionnaire comprised of a series of 5-point Likert scale questions was completed by 62 respondents. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. Findings - Insufficient government support & funding and a lack of regulatory incentives for CE adoption to be the two most significant barriers facing South African SMEs transition to the circular economy. Conclusion - Until CE business models are viable enough for South African SMEs to transition from the LE to the CE without a reduction in their profitability levels, regulatory incentives will have to be provided by the South African government to make the transition financially viable.

    Where do HIV-infected adolescents go after transfer? – Tracking transition/transfer of HIV-infected adolescents using linkage of cohort data to a health information system platform

    Introduction: To evaluate long-term outcomes in HIV-infected adolescents, it is important to identify ways of tracking outcomes after transfer to a different health facility. The Department of Health (DoH) in the Western Cape Province (WCP) of South Africa uses a single unique identifier for all patients across the health service platform. We examined adolescent outcomes after transfer by linking data from four International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS Southern Africa (IeDEA-SA) cohorts in the WCP with DoH data.
