    Academic identities and communities of practice in a professional discipline

    This paper explores the dynamics surrounding the formation of academic identities in a context where the nature of academic work is contested both as a result of tensions within the discipline and in response to pressure from both the institution and the field of higher education. It is based on a case study which investigated the process of academic identity formation at the micro level of a department at a South African university. The study revealed a complex relationship between identity construction and participation within the particular configuration of teaching, professional and research communities of practice that defined the academic field in the department. Multiple identity trajectories were evident, indicating the role of individual agency, despite the dominance of a professional community of practice within the department. The arrival of new academics in the department without professional practice experience was found to have created the possibility of a changed notion of the academic within the discipline.

    Distinguishing the field of educational technology
    (Academic Publishing Limited, 2008) Czerniewicz, Laura
    Drawing on what researchers and professionals in the field internationally report, this paper reviews educational technology as an emergent field. The review reveals the continuum of perspectives on what the field is, and how it is bounded or fragmented. The paper describes the field from two perspectives: the professional and scholarly and considers how the forms of knowledge differ and overlap in each domain. It posits some dichotomies which may frame the field such as science/social science and positivist/post-modernist. Finally the paper provides conceptual frameworks for distinguishing fields from each other and suggests what the categorisation of the field might mean, especially considering its emergent status in a rapidly changing context.

    Medicine and the Arts Week 6 - In dialogue about the corpse

    In this video, Susan Levine reflects on how each of the three speakers in previous videos used their different perspectives to address the topic of death and the corpse and poses additional questions to them. Lorna is asked about her interaction with the families of the deceased. Deborah is asked to elaborate on the concept of 'discipline'. Kathryn is asked how her work interfaces with art presentation and representation. This is the sixth video in Week 6 of the Medicine and the Arts Massive Open Online Course.
