This may be done either by open or percutaneous technique. This chapter focuses on the open surgical technique in the adult patient. Indications: Tracheostomy is done for airway obstruction, respiratory support (assisted ventilation), pulmonary hygiene, elimination of dead space, and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea.
