It is generally done as an elective neck dissection (END) i.e. in the absence of clinically apparent cervical metastases when the risk of having occult cervical nodal metastases is thought to exceed 15-20%; or for very limited nodal metastases. It may be technically more demanding than a modified neck dissection (MND) due to poorer exposure and requires a sound knowledge of the 3-dimensional anatomy of the neck.
