Although a number of risk factors and the pathophysiological mechanisms for the development of GIT symptoms during exercise have been proposed, scientific evidence in support of these factors and mechanisms is limited. Altered blood flow to the GIT during exercise have been suggested as a possible mechanism for the pathophysiology of GIT symptoms. However, changes in blood flow in the superioir mesentric artery (SMA) and the coeliac artery in athletes presenting with GIT symptoms during exercise have not previously been investigated.
