The research is socio-phonetic in its focus and therefore three variables, the PRICE, NURSE and KIT vowels of Wells’ (1982) lexical sets, were selected for acoustic analysis, a selection which was guided partly by the researcher’s own intuitions and partly by observed correlations in the impressionistic literature between certain realisations of these vowels and the Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal as regions.
