This study investigates satire and power as contextually informed by their socio-political milieu. The origins of satire, both etymologically and as genre, constitute the first section. Shifts in power, moral codes and satirical targets are analysed and deconstructed within the context of each timeframe. Considering the reconceptualisation of traditional power dynamics with regard to gender and identity within a post-colonial context, the question arises: What is the future of satire?
