This is important in fields such as orthopaedics and implant design. Various models of bone remodelling are discussed, and a strain energy based as well as a strain remodelling based algorithm are applied in two and three dimensions. Properties such as dependence on initial conditions, development of physiologically realistic solutions and existence of long-term steady states are investigated. The strain based model has some advantages in that it is defined in terms of physiologically meaningful and measurable parameters and that it develops a long-term steady state solutions different from the case where the bone either resorbs completely or reaches cortical density.
