    An agent based layered framework to facilitate intelligent Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are networks of small, typically low-cost hardware devices which are able to sense various physical phenomenon in their surrounding environments. These simple nodes are also able to perform basic processing and wirelessly communicate with each other. The power of these networks arise from their ability to combine their many vantage points of the individual nodes and to work together. This allows for behaviour to emerge which is greater than the sum of the ability of all the nodes in the network. The complexity of these networks varies based on the application domain and the physical phenomenon being sensed. Although sensor networks are currently well understood and used in a number of real world applications, a number limitations still exit. This research aims to overcome a number of issues faced by current WSNs, the largest of which is their monolithic or tightly coupled structure which result in static and application specific WSNs. We aim to overcome these issues by designing a dynamically reconfigurable system which is application neutral. The proposed system is also required to facilitate intelligence and be sufficiently efficient for low power sensor node hardware.

    Enhancing home based care for HIV patients using an advisory expert system

    South Africa has one of the highest Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence rates in the world. People living with HIV/AIDS experience many unrelieved symptoms. Nutritional care and support are important in preventing development of nutritional deficiencies. Home remedies can extend and improve the quality of their lives. Home remedies treatment involves eating healthy food, avoiding certain types of foods, psychological and emotional support and practicing hygiene to avoid skin infections (Sizani, Bandile; Nikiwe 2012). HIV/AIDS treatment and management strategies require ongoing management and support. In this research, we work with people from a clinic in Gugulethu Township in Western Cape, South Africa. The area has high prevalence of HIV (Ministry of health South Africa 2011). Most of the HIV patients in this area access medical information by walking long distances to the clinic. Most of these patients are poor and sometimes cannot afford to visit the clinic regularly for medical advice. In this township there is scarcity of health care workers (HCWs). The HCWs toil on many fronts to meet the enormous demand for the HIV/AIDS services but they are not able to meet the patients' needs. The aim of this research is to empower HIV-patients to self-manage the HIV-related symptoms which they experience. We investigated the way in which the HCWs deliver information to the patients. We interviewed the patients to understand what measures they take to manage the symptoms which they experienced. Consequently, we developed an advisory expert system to enhance Home-Based Care for HIV patients. An advisory expert system is defined as a computing system which is capable of representing and reasoning about some knowledge–rich domain, with a view to solving problems and giving advice (Gustafson et al. 1994). Since South Africa has high mobile phone penetration and most of the patients own them, we opted to use mobile phone as a tool to access the information provided by the advisory expert system. The system was then deployed at the clinic. We trained both HCWs and patients how to use the system. The findings were captured and reported after a six month deployment of the system. The results show that our system can be used as an effective tool to disseminate nutritional and psychological support information to HIV- patients in Gugulethu. The system is simple, yet practical. It helps the patients to self-manage the HIV-related symptoms which they experienced and at the same time, saves time and cost for both HCWs and the patients.

    Extensibility in end-user network applications : a feature or a flaw?

    The rise in global connectivity driven by user-demand is bringing about a wave of end-user interconnectivity applications. This, coupled with the improvements in software security that have forced a shift from syntactic to semantic attacks points at an every-growing likelihood of attacks targeting the human element. Literature predicts the extensibility of applications as presenting a growing threat, but the context of this threat beyond the web-browser model, remains unclear and uncharted. This work examines the possible threat extensibility poses in this developing context of greater enduser connectivity.

    A study of mobile phone ad hoc networks via bluetooth with different routing protocols

    The growth of mobile computing is changing the way people communicate. Mobile devices, especially mobile phones, have become cheaper and more powerful, and are able to run more applications and provide networking services. Mobile phones use fixed cellular infrastructure such as base stations and transmission towers to enable users to share multimedia content and access the internet at any time or place. However, using the internet is costly. Therefore, one of the solutions is to create impromptu ad hoc networks to share information among users. Such networks are infrastructureless and self-organising, much like mobile ad hoc networks. This dissertation therefore investigates how mobile phones with low-power Bluetooth technology can be used to create ad hoc networks that connect mobile phones and allow them to share information. The mobile phones should be able organise themselves for multi-hop communication. Routing becomes important in order to achieve effciency in data communication. Several existing routing protocols were developed and evaluated for this network to determine how effciently they deliver data and deal with network disruptions such as a device moving out of transmission range. Representative routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networking, peer-to-peer networks and publish/subscribe systems were evaluated according to performance metrics defidened in the research, namely total traffc, data traffc, control traffc, delay, convergence time, and positive response. Prototypes for Nokia phones were developed and tested in a small ad hoc network. For practical networking setup, a simple routing protocol that uses the limited mobile phone resources effciently would be better than a sophisticated routing protocol that keeps routing information about the network participants.
