    TEDI 4 Week 3 - Support needs - a caregiver's perspective

    In this video, Taryn du Toit interviews Eliz-Mari Williams about her experience working with children with severe to profound intellectual disability. Eliz-Mari works in Touws Rivier works with children from ages to 3 - 17 who have intellectual disabilities. Eliza-Mari describes how she works with children, starting with analysing their emotional state, and then performing the various developmental work (gross motor, fine motor, etc.) she does with the children. She then discusses the challenges she faces, primarily dealing with stigma from the community. She discusses what motivates her, and then speaks about how she tries to communicate with members of the community, as well as the different kinds of physical, social, financial and emotional support that she provides as part of her care work.

    In this video, Taryn du Toit discusses the support needs of a child with severe to profound intellectual disability. She discusses the support needs these children have to allow them to participate in education and in society at large. She discusses the levels a which support needs to be provided, such as the local community, the wider community, and society at large, and the different actors within these specific levels, and the interaction between the different levels. She also discusses how the children themselves can impact the wider community. She then goes into detail about how support should be provided to the child, stressing the child's agency and respect towards them and their dignity.
