In Chapters 111-V, the argument focuses on particular themes and characters in the operas that appear to influence Joyce, whether in terms of direct reference or oblique allusion. The focus of each of these three chapters is, respectively, the artist-hero, the father-son relationship and the symbolic role of woman.
