dc.description.abstract This dissertation describes a numerical investigation into the tactical advantages offered by upgrading a hypothetical aircraft with a newer engine model. The airframe is largely based on the Dassault Mirage III, and the engines are based on the SNECMA Atar 9k50 and M53. A brief overview of recent developments in combat aircraft design and engine performance is provided which illustrates the trend towards high thrust to weight ratio aircraft engines with lower fuel consumption. en_ZA
