- ItemOpen AccessPosition Paper: Digital Literacies(2015) Brown, Cheryl; Mayisela, TabisaDigital literacies are an emerging phenomenon that both international and national higher education institutions (HEIs) are still grappling to explicitly define. Universities are beginning to adopt the terminology of digital literacies but probably have a long way to go in adopting practices that emphasise the fuller vision of what digital literacies encompass. Conceptualisation of digital literacies is now shifting focus from a capabilities and consumption of technology notion to a use of technology for academic practices and contribution to production notion. This paper highlights the importance of contextualising digital literacies into disciplinary context and therefore, embedding them in courses or subjects.
- ItemOpen AccessPosition Paper: Personal Mobile Devices and Laptops as Learning Tools(2015) Brown, Cheryl; Pallitt, NicolaThis document was originally co-authored as a position paper for Higher Education South Africa (HESA). It discusses the usefulness of personal mobile devices and laptops as learning tools in higher education learning environments, examining the affordances of these devices both in and beyond the classroom. It provides an overview of current uses in South African universities (where laptop and tablet initiatives are still relatively novel) and offers recommendations for the successful implementation of such projects.
- ItemOpen AccessPosition Paper: MOOCs(2015) Czerniewicz, Laura; Deacon, Andrew; Fife, Mary-Ann; Small, Janet; Walji, SukainaMassive open online courses (MOOCs) are a flexible and open form of self-directed, online learning designed for mass participation. There are no fees or entry requirements and no formal academic credit is available. While completion rates are low (on average ten per cent) due to varying motivations for enrolling in a MOOC, absolute numbers of participants who complete are usually high. While access to the course material is free, MOOC platform providers often offer certificates of completion at a cost. MOOC platforms provide institutions with cloud-based hosting environments for delivering courses, offering scale and functionality while the institution provides the course material and reputational value. This paper discusses the key aspects of Massive Open Online Courses in a South African educational context.
- ItemOpen AccessPosition Paper: Open Educational Resources(2015) Hodgkinson-Williams, Cheryl; Cox, GlendaThis document provides a brief overview of Open Educational Resources (OER) and recommendations for their adoption in higher education institutions set again the current trends internationally. The specific OER affordances are highlighted as well as their associated costs and particular cost reduction possibilities. OER adoptions in various contexts in South Africa are provided to showcase the initial benefits and challenges identified so far.
