- ItemOpen AccessExploring the experiences of breast cancer survivors at various stages of treatment: an analysis of the constructions of breast cancer and of femininity - summary report for CANSA(2013-03) Mulder, AnjaThis research was conducted towards an Honours degree in Gender Studies at the University of Cape Town, as well as to contribute to the knowledge base of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). The focus of this research was to explore and document the experiences and needs of women with breast cancer, waiting for radiation treatment. By applying a gendered framework through which to view these experiences, emphasis was also placed on breast cancer survivors' conceptualisations of feminine identity and how their breast cancer and treatment trajectory impacted on these. Drawing on the narratives of women's lived experiences, it is my hope that information gained from this study will help CANSA to develop additional emotional support for women.

- ItemOpen AccessFurther examinations of the SBT operating model to explore new tagging model and grid specifications(2009) Kurota, Hiroyuki; Sakai, Osamu; Takahashi, Norio; Butterworth, Doug SStock assessments and constant catch projections were conducted using new Operating Models (OMs; sbtmod21 and sbtmod22, which have different tagging models) developed by the CCSBT ESC. The current analysis showed that: 1. a new candidate for the tagging model (incorporated in sbtmod22) led to higher M0 (natural mortality at age 0), lower M10 (natural mortality at age 10) and lower omega (non-linearity of the CPUE-abundance relationship) estimates than the previous tagging model which is used in sbtmod21, and estimated lower current stock abundance relative to the virgin unfished biomass, 2. a high S (S=0.5; S is the proportion of longline overcatch attributed to the reported effort) led to a lower M10, but the overall results were scarcely different from those for the base assumption (S=0.25), and 3. a slight change of assumptions regarding the Indonesian fishing selectivity impacted on M estimates substantially (leading to low M0 and high M10), which indicates poor ability to explain the Indonesian catch-at-age data when using a low M10 as pointed out during the 2008 SAG meeting.

- ItemOpen AccessLow cost fencing project 2013 Funding Proposal / Report, Engineers without Borders (EWB) – University of Cape Town(2014) Makhado, Mashudu; Manyuha, Mufarisi; Alex, Abhilash; Ma-Kiese, Stephane Masamba; Naidoo Damian; Bessinger, Alexa; Muridili, MashuduThis proposal outlines a request for project funding for the EWB UCT's low cost fencing project. The aim was to design and build a low cost fence for a playground at a pre-school in a Cape Town community based in a low income area. Facing the challenges of material theft in the area one of the objectives was to provide an alternative to the wood fencing that is currently being used such that this new design does not lure thieves. Moreover, the aim is to provide a safe and reliable design for fencing the playground that is durable and comes at a low cost. Plastic netting (supported with concrete poles) was suggested as potential replacement for the traditional wooden fence.

- ItemOpen AccessA review of the Knowledge Management Centre: conducted for the Economic and Human Development Department, City of Cape Town(2012-07) Underwood, Peter G; Smith, GretchenFollowing a study of the resources and services of the Knowledge Management Centre (KMC) of the Economic and Human Development Department (EHD) and a survey of a sample of users and potential users, the conclusion is that the KMC is NOT operating in a Knowledge Management mode; it is operating as a small special library, in a demand-driven mode (page 7). Interviews with the sample of users indicate that a Knowledge Management mode of operation would be more appropriate for supporting the work of the EHD (page 9). It is proposed that the two mutually supportive KM initiatives of leveraging information content and the development and utilisation of knowledge communities should form the core of the EHD's KM strategy (page 13). A set of integrated actions are recommended to implement a Knowledge Management Programme and capacitate the KMC at the EHD (pages 15-18). A job description for a post of Knowledge Officer is provided (pages 19-20).
