It aimed to provide feedback for Embrace Dignity, a Cape Town-based NGO, on how effective their model was in providing an exit from sex work for prostituted women.

- ItemOpen AccessDetermining the necessity of a footbridge in Statice Heights(2011-10) UCT Knowledge Co-opThe research stemmed from a request from The Women's Circle (TWC), an NGO that works in Statice Heights and other areas. TWC's aim is to encourage and assist people in finding solutions to the challenges they face in their context. In this particular case TWC requested assistance in motivating for the building of a footbridge, by the City of Cape Town, across the canal in a location currently used to access services in Bridgetown. TWC argue that the current infrastructure is inadequate.
- ItemOpen AccessDeveloping a user-friendly client database(2012-12) UCT Knowledge Co-opEpilepsy SA approached the UCT Knowledge Co-op for assistance with the development of an electronic client database system. Manual reporting was becoming too time consuming. They required a system that would manage their client base and track all services offered, then compile reports of all activities. The reports are required for management and to provide funders with an understanding of Epilepsy SA's efforts. In addition staff would need to be trained to use the new system. The UCT Knowledge Co-op approached the Honours Outreach and Community Involvement Programme (HOCIP) based in the Information Systems (IS) department. Ewan James was recruited to dedicate his community service to this project.
- ItemOpen AccessThe development of a design for a school hall(2012) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis project looked at the development of a design for a hall at a primary school. 9 Students used the Sim office project of their Architecture course to work with the Extra-Mural Education Project (EMEP), and the Kannemeyer Primary School in Grassy Park. The object was to develop designs for a school hall, including changes to existing buildings. Nine students from the Architecture Department at UCT worked on the designs.
- ItemOpen AccessExploring the experiences of breast cancer survivors(2012-11) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis research was conducted to contribute to the knowledge base of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Research indicates that breast cancer is diagnosed in approximately one in twenty-nine women in South Africa. Women with lower income often experience lengthy waiting periods between diagnosis and treatment. Very little qualitative research has been conducted to explore lived experiences of patients with breast cancer. This project set out to explore women's experiences at various stages of treatment. Understanding better what it is like for them will help CANSA and others to develop important emotional and other support for women on this journey.
- ItemOpen AccessExploring the Meaning of Fatherhood in Guguletu(2013-10) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis was a study conducted by a Gender Studies Honours student who collaborated with the NGO Ikamva Labantu in Guguletu. The NGO was interested in understanding men's involvement as fathers and what support they needed for this role. The aim of the study was two fold: - to explore the experiences of fathers who were permanently involved in their children's lives, and - to unpack how fatherhood is practiced in South Africa This was done by examining how these men assumed their role, how their experiences were shaped, the demands that follow fatherhood, and highlighting some of the support structures they relied on in times of hardships.

Considering the high prevalence of gender based violence in South Africa, the researchers wanted to understand: - the experiences of women involved in the sex work industry - barriers to exiting sex work - the process of exiting sex work
- ItemOpen AccessIT support to empower the Women's Circle(2013-10) UCT Knowledge Co-opThe Women's Circle (TWC) is a non-profit organization (NPO) that aims to empower women in low-income areas by providing assistance with education and career development. The UCT Knowledge Co-op was able to connect the skills offered by the Honours Outreach and Community Involvement Programme (HOCIP) based in the Information Systems (IS) department to TWC. Luyanda Mhlauli & Ishe Madzime, IS Honours students helped TWC develop a functioning website and train a group of members with basic computer literacy skills.
- ItemOpen AccessLow cost fencing for a pre-school(2013-10) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis is an engineering study requested by the New World Foundation. A team from Engineers without Borders, a student agency at UCT, looked at designing and building a low cost fence for a playground at their pre-school in Lavender Hill. The objective was to provide affordable fencing that would overcome the challenges of theft that the community faces. The conditions for the material was that it should not have fuel usage value such as wood, no scrap material value and it should not block visibility.
- ItemOpen AccessLow-cost fencing for a pre-school in Lavender Hill(2011-07) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis is an engineering project that focused on providing assistance to the New World Foundation's community centre in Lavender Hill in the Western Cape. This community faces many challenges from unemployment to high crime rates. The NWF pre-school faced the challenge of having their fence stolen on several occasions and therefore needed a low-cost, effective solution to this problem.
- ItemOpen AccessA review of the Knowledge Management Centre of the Economic and Human Development Department, City of Cape Town(2012-03) UCT Knowledge Co-opThe Knowledge Management Centre (KMC) for a municipal department was set up by a Project Consultant in 1998, with the aim of providing a largely self-service resource centre to store and distribute appropriate and up-to-date information linking to economic development and tourism. The aim of the project is briefly to evaluate the current processes of the KMC and to determine whether these continue to address the needs of its present clients and of potential clients within the City of Cape Town municipal services sector, also to establish whether the KMC is suitably lined up with modern information service delivery techniques. This "As is" assessment is compared with current global best practice in Knowledge Management (KM) for information services of a similar scope and kind to identify a "To be" cluster of facilities and services. A gap analysis identifies areas of change, skill acquisition and suitable strategies for closing the gaps.
- ItemOpen AccessThe Role of Discourse in Development Work(2012) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis study was an analysis of the power of discourse that positions development practitioners in the course of development work in a non-profit organisation in Cape Town. The research studied the interactions of four female development practitioners, who facilitated workshops on health and human rights using REFLECT (Regenerated Freirean Literacy through Empowering Community Techniques) development methodology. The researcher assisted with the planning of workshops in return for practitioners' participation in the research.
- ItemOpen AccessSetting up a media club to help keep kids in school(2013-10) UCT Knowledge Co-opA non-government organization called "outh Empowerment through School" (Y.E.S) aims to equip learners with employability skills. It offers programmes at the Lavender Hill Secondary School that encourage its over 1000 learners to complete their schooling. YES approached approached the UCT Knowledge Co-op with a project idea for UCT students to assist in the setting up of a media club for learners. The aim of the project was for the IS students to "train the trainers" who would continue running the club in the future. Pascale Henke and Terrina Govender of the Honours Outreach & Community Involvement Programme (HOCIP) based in UCT's Information Systems depart-ment took on the project with great enthusiasm.
- ItemOpen AccessWhy patients struggle with anti-retroviral treatment(2012-10) UCT Knowledge Co-opThis is a Public Health project. The recent increase of anti-retroviral treatment (ART) in public clinics in South Africa means that many more people have access to treatment. If patients become resistant to the standard ART package they are put on an alternative second-line ART; if that fails, there is no further public treatment option to control the HI virus. Yet, literature addressing facilitators and barriers to treatment adherence faced by patients on second-line ART is scarce.
