Amongst the known risk factors associated with the cancer is fumonisin exposure (a mycotoxin growing on maize), poor dietary habits and nutrient deficiencies. Little is known about the current dietary habits and nutrient intake of these people, and therefore maize consumption and fumonisins exposure.
- ItemOpen AccessThe development of a questionnaire to test dietitians' practices and knowledge with regard to dietary supplements and fortified foods(2003) Steyn, N P; Labadarios, DTo develop a questionnaire for evaluating dietitians' knowledge and practices with regard to the use of dietary supplements. A cross-sectional validation study was carried out in two phases, namely 1) questionnaire planning and development and 2) test evaluation. The study sample comprised 48 nurses, 105 dietetic interns and 367 registered dietitians. An expert academic group comprising 9 dieticians with research and teaching experience rated the academic relevance and importance of knowledge questions in an item pool of 355 questions, in order to ensure face and content validity.
- ItemOpen AccessHealthKick : evaluating the impact of a school-based intervention on the dietary adequacy of learners from low-income settings in the Western Cape Province, South Africa(2011) Abrahams, Zulfa; Steyn, N P; Ehrlich, R; De Villiers, AHealthKick is a primary school-based nutrition and physical activity intervention programme aimed at promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviour to reduce diabetes risk factors in disadvantaged communities in South Africa. HealthKick aims to promote and increase learners', teachers' and parents' consumption of healthy food and their participation in health enhancing physical activity. This dissertation sub-study forms part of the evaluation of the greater HealthKick project. The primary objective of the study was to compare the dietary adequacy of learners at intervention and control schools after 18 months of intervention. The subsidiary objective was to identify the determinants of dietary adequacy.
