Injuries occur at all levels of participation in gymnastics from recreational to elite levels. Elite gymnasts may commence training from as early as five years of age and may train consistently for between 20 to 40 hours per week over a full calendar year. Gymnasts are at high risk of injury, and this is associated with longer practice times and increased complexity of routines. Gymnastics coaches are involved in the selection of training programmes for the athlete that may result in both an improvement in athletic performance and decrease in injury risk. Coaches are also typically responsible for promoting injury prevention behaviours in athletes. The aim of this dissertation was to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of South African-based gymnastics coaches regarding injuries and injury prevention in the sport.
