Primary settling and treatment in aerobic and anaerobic lagoons typically precede disposal to land. Land treatment can effectively remove COD and also benefit the soil by increasing organic matter, cation exchange capacity and moisture retention capacity. Adverse effects can include salinisation of soils and groundwater, soil structural degradation and odours generated by anaerobic conditions.
