    This week focuses on teacher empowerment and what teachers need to know to better support learners with disabilities.     TEDI 2 Week 1 - Being Part of the Deaf Community

    In this video Jabaar Mohamed, the only deaf person in a family of seven, spells out the differences between growing up in a hearing community versus a Deaf community. He tells his experience as a Deaf learner in primary school and how he learned sign language. He highlights the impact of a role model in the life of a deaf person and also talks about the barriers to education and employment Deaf/deaf people face.     TEDI 2 Week 1 - Understanding Deaf Culture and Community

    In this video, Jabaar Mohamed, himself a Deaf person and Provincial Director of DeafSA, Western Cape, focuses on Sign Language, the Deaf culture and the Deaf Community. Drawing parallels between Deaf and deaf, he explains the need for the teacher to understand the dynamics that surround the two. He stresses on the importance of deaf schools and what teachers should know and do when teaching deaf/Deaf learners.     TEDI 2 Week 4 - Collaborating with Teaching Assistants
    (2019-06-01) Mohamed, Jabaar
    In this video, Jabaar Mohamed, Provincial Director of DeafSA, talks about the importance of team work and how the teacher and the teaching assistant can work collaboratively. Quoting Article 24 of the UNCRPD, he reminds participants about the role of schools in facilitating the learning of sign language and promoting the linguistic identity of the Deaf Community. He says teaching assistants usually act as role models for Deaf children who may never have had one in their lives. He then highlights the need for the teacher and the teaching assistant to understand their roles and duties and carry them out diligently in the interest of the leaners.
