    Theatre of struggle and transformation: A critical investigation into the power of oral traditions as used by director Mark Fleishman

    In 1991 Mark Fleishman wrote his Masters dissertation on Workshop Theatre in 1980s South Africa. The focus of his investigation was an analysis of the connections between Workshop Theatre and both the African oral and European carnivalesque traditions. From this analysis Fleishman realised that the formulae of oral traditions fit the model of workshop theatre and that both of these contain powerful tools for the making of theatre for the people. In a later article (1997) Fleishman continued to express his belief in the need for a physical, dialogical theatre of struggle and transformation as a collective mode of expression. This he sees as essential to the quest for 'freedom' within the constantly evolving and complex socio-political context of South Africa.
