- ItemOpen AccessThe development of a cost-effective beam loss monitor for use at the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS(2008) Walton, Stanley Douglas; Fearick, RogerThe purpose of this work was to develop a cost-effective beam loss monitor for use at the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS. To this end. the commonly used materials and technologies were reviewed and photo diodes were chosen because of their low price, high performance and ready availability. Experiments have been carried out and compared to theoretical calculations. Recommendations for future developments are presented.

The mathematical methods employed by the analyser are also reviewed and the final system is calibrated and tested against experimental data taken at iThemba LABS, Cape Town.

- ItemOpen AccessA feasibility study of using the AFRODITE Clover detectors as Compton polarimeters(2000) Mhlahlo, Nceba; Fearick, Roger; Newman, R TA technique used to measure the linear polarisation of γ-rays has been described and demonstrated using the AFRODITE (African Omnipurpose Detector For Innovative Techniques and Experiments) Clover detectors at the National Accelerator Centre (NAC), located in Faure near Cape Town. The feasibility study of measuring the linear polarisation of γ-rays using the AFRODITE spectrometer at the NAC has been done for the first time and the sensitivity of the Clover detectors to linear polarisation has been measured by internal calibration of the polarimeter, using γ-rays of known polarisation.
- ItemOpen AccessImplementation of a Custom Muon High Level Trigger Monitoring System(2010) Mohlalisi, Seforo; Fearick, Roger; Buthelezi, Zinhle; Vilakazi, ZeblonA Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) is one of the 4 major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Its main aim is to investigate the physics of strongly interacting matter in proton-proton, nucleus-nucleus and nucleus-proton or proton-nucleus collisions at ultra high energy densi- ties, where the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is expected to form. The experiment is expected to produce data at very high rates of about 25 Gbytes/s however the bandwidth to permanent storage is limited to about 10% (1.25 Gbyte/s) of the total expected data rates. In order to reduce data to permanent storage a special level of selecting interesting/relevant physics events is required. In ALICE the trigger (selection) of signals is issued based on a series of levels varying from levels 0 (L0) up to the High Level Trigger (HLT). For the ALICE muon spectrometer, the role of the trigger is to select events containing muon tracks, with the transverse momentum (pt) above a given threshold. Due to the limited spatial resolution of the muon trigger chambers a pt cut above a few GeV with the L0 trigger is not possible. While the L0 signal for the muon spectrometer is issued at about 700 - 800 ns, the HLT is delivered at about 1 ms. The role of the HLT is to perform online and o ine reconstruction of the ALICE muon spectrometer data in order to improve the measured (L0) pT resolution. In this way a better separation between relevant physics events and unwanted events (background) can be attainable, which could eventu- ally lead to lower trigger rates. The HLT is designed to improve signal- to-background ratio in the raw data transferred to the storage. In order to facilitate online/o ine data analysis the HLT monitoring system which will enable the user to graphically view the events during the reconstruc- tion phase was developed in this study. The system will read and decode the reconstructed events from the HLT analysis chain using the HLT Online Monitoring Environment including ROOT (HOMER) and displaying them on the ALICE Event Visualization Environment (ALIEVE). In addition, the ii utility, dHLTdumpraw, that inspects, with ner detail, the contents of all muon HLT internal data blocks and the detector data link (DDL) raw data stream is also described.

- ItemOpen AccessPython for physics(2014-08-22) Fearick, RogerThis is an introduction to the Python programming language for computational physics. Python is a programming language which is increasingly being used for computation in physics. Python is easy to learn; it is a modern, interpreted, object-oriented language; Python programs are simple, clean and easily readable; and it has a wide range of support packages (or program libraries) useful for numerical computation. This resource is useful for physics and mathematics students looking for open-source programmes to support their work.
- ItemOpen AccessSingle proton transfer on 55Mn(1996) Newman, Richard Thomas; Perez, Sandy; Fearick, RogerDifferential cross sections for the ⁵⁵Mn(d,³He)⁵⁴Cr and ⁵⁵Mn(d,d)⁵⁵Mn(g.s.) reactions at Ed = 45.6 MeV were measured in the 6°-48° angular region (laboratory frame) using a k = 600 MeV magnetic spectrometer with a resolution of ~40 keV (full-width at half maximum). Spectroscopic factors associated with the observed transitions to twenty-four ⁵⁴Cr final states up to 6.107 MeV excitation were determined from local, zero-range distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) analyses of the measured angular distributions, allowing for l = 0, 1, 2 and 3 transfers. An optical-model analysis of the (d,d) data has been performed in order to yield optimum values of the potential parameters required for calculating the distorted wave-functions associated with the entrance channel.
