A number of different processes for the production of resorcinol are available with each synthesis route having intrinsic advantages and disadvantages that differ from one process to another. A viable route to resourcinol in South Africa is via meta-dinitrobenzene due to the large-scale production of nitrobenzene from benzene. Since meta-dintrobenzene is formed as a side-product during the production of nitrobenzene and is hydrogenated quite easily, the acid hydrolysis of MPDA to resorcinol will be considered during this investigation.
