One particular strain of his work which has gained influence in recent times, is his theory of excess, which he calls the "general economy". In this dissertation, I wish to apply certain aspects of this concept to consumer Capitalism. In particular, I wish to examine Bataille's notion of "heterogeneity" and its relevance in contemporary Western society.
