Excited muons are sought in the channel pp → µµ∗ → µµ jet jet, assuming both the production and decay occur via a contact interaction. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb−1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence of excited muons is found, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-muon mass mµ ∗ . For mµ ∗ between 1.3 TeV and 3.0 TeV, the upper limit on σB(µ ∗ → µqq¯) is between 0.6 and 1 fb. Limits on σB are converted to lower bounds on the compositeness scale Λ. In the limiting case Λ = mµ ∗ , excited muons with a mass below 2.8 TeV are excluded. With the same model assumptions, these limits at larger µ ∗ masses improve upon previous limits from traditional searches based on the gauge-mediated decay µ ∗ → µγ

The charged-particle multiplicity, its dependence on transverse momentum and pseudorapidity and the dependence of the mean transverse momentum on the charged-particle multiplicity are presented. The measurements are performed with charged particles with transverse momentum greater than 500 MeV and absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.5, in events with at least one charged particle satisfying these kinematic requirements. Additional measurements in a reduced phase space with absolute pseudorapidity less than 0.8 are also presented, in order to compare with other experiments. The results are corrected for detector effects, presented as particle-level distributions and are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators.

In the current study, the results of these searches are combined to provide a more stringent test of models predicting heavy resonances with couplings to vector bosons. Direct searches for a charged diboson resonance decaying to WZ in the ℓνℓ'ℓ' (ℓ=μ,e), ℓℓqq¯,ℓνqq¯ and fully hadronic final states are combined and upper limits on the rate of production times branching ratio to the WZ bosons are compared with predictions of an extended gauge model with a heavy W' boson. Also, direct searches for a neutral diboson resonance decaying to WW and ZZ in the ℓℓqq¯, ℓνqq¯, and fully hadronic final states are combined and upper limits on the rate of production times branching ratio to the WW and ZZ bosons are compared with predictions for a heavy, spin-2 graviton in an extended Randall–Sundrum model where the Standard Model fields are allowed to propagate in the bulk of the extra dimension.

The analysis is performed on events containing one isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets in the final state. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 . The signal is extracted using a maximum-likelihood fit of a discriminant which is based on the matrix element method and optimized in order to separate single-top-quark s-channel events from the main background contributions, which are top-quark pair production and W boson production in association with heavy-flavour jets. The measurement leads to an observed signal significance of 3.2 standard deviations and a measured cross-section of σs = 4.8±0.8(stat.)+1.6 −1.3 (syst.) pb, which is consistent with the Standard Model expectation. The expected significance for the analysis is 3.9 standard deviations.

Measurements of isolated-photon plus jets cross sections are presented as func- tions of the photon and jet transverse momenta. The cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the photon and the jets, the azimuthal angle between the jets, the photon–jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon–jet centre-of-mass system are presented. The pattern of QCD radiation around the photon and the leading jet is investigated by measuring jet production in an annular region cen- tred on each object; enhancements are observed around the leading jet with respect to the photon in the directions towards the beams. The experimental measurements are compared to several different theoretical calculations, and overall a good description of the data is found. © 2017 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V. Introduction The production of prompt photons in association with jets in proton–proton collisions, pp → γ + jets + X, provides a testing ground for perturbative QCD (pQCD) with a hard colour- less probe less affected by hadronisation effects than jet production. The measurements of the angular correlations between the photon and the jets can be used to probe the dynamics of the hard-scattering process. Since the dominant production mechanism in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) proceeds via the qg → qγ process, measurements of prompt-photon plus jet production are useful in constraining the gluon density in the proton [1,2]. The charmed mesons have been reconstructed in the range of transverse momentum 3.5 < pT(D) < 100 GeV and pseudorapidity were measured for D∗± and D± production. The differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity |η(D)| < 2.1. The next-to-leading-order QCD predictions are consistent with the data in the visible kinematic region within the large theoretical uncertainties. Using the visible D cross sections and an extrapolation to the full kinematic phase space, the strangeness-suppression factor in charm fragmentation, the fraction of charged non-strange D mesons produced in a vector state, and the total cross section of charm production at √s = 7 TeV were derived.

The cross section is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined by the presence of exactly one electron and one muon, missing transverse momentum and exactly one jet with a transverse momentum above 25 GeV and a pseudorapidity of η <4.5. The leptons are required to have opposite electric charge and to pass transverse momentum and pseudorapidity requirements. The fiducial cross section is found to be View the MathML source. In combination with a previous measurement restricted to leptonic final states with no associated jets, the fiducial cross section of WW production with zero or one jet is measured to be View the MathML source. The ratio of fiducial cross sections in final states with one and zero jets is determined to be 0.36±0.05. Finally, a total cross section extrapolated from the fiducial measurement of WW production with zero or one associated jet is reported. The measurements are compared to theoretical predictions and found in good agreement.

This Letter presents a measurement of the distribution of one such variable, the jet pull angle. The pull angle is measured for jets produced in tt¯ events with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other decaying to jets using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre--of--mass energy of s√=8 TeV at the LHC. The jet pull angle distribution is corrected for detector resolution and acceptance effects and is compared to various models.

The events were selected in the dilepton eµ decay channel with two identified b-jets. The numbers of additional jets for various jet transverse momentum (pT) thresholds, and the normalised differential cross-sections as a function of pT for the five highest-pT additional jets, were measured in the jet pseudorapidity range |η| < 4.5. The gap fraction, the fraction of events which do not contain an additional jet in a central rapidity region, was measured for several rapidity intervals as a function of the minimum pT of a single jet or the scalar sum of pT of all additional jets. These fractions were also measured in different intervals of the invariant mass of the eµb¯b system. All measurements were corrected for detector effects, and found to be mostly well-described by predictions from next-to-leading-order and leading-order tt¯ event generators with appropriate parameter choices. The results can be used to further optimise the parameters used in such generators.

Significant long-range “ridge-like” correlations are observed for pairs with small relative azimuthal angle (|∆ φ| < π/ 3) and back-to-back pairs (|∆ φ| > 2π/ 3) over the transverse momentum range 0 . 4 < p T < 12 GeV and in different intervals of event activity. The event activity is defined by either the number of reconstructed tracks or the total transverse energy on the Pb-fragmentation side. The azimuthal structure of such long-range correlations is Fourier decomposed to obtain the harmonics v n as a function of p T and event activity. The extracted v n values for n = 2 to 5 decrease with n. The v 2 and v 3 values are found to be positive in the measured p T range. The v 1 is also measured as a function of p T and is observed to change sign around p T ≈ 1 . 5–2.0 GeV and then increase to about 0.1 for p T > 4 GeV. The v 2 ( p T ) , v 3 ( p T ) and v 4 ( p T ) are compared to the v n coefficients in Pb+Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2 .76 TeV with similar event multiplicities. Reasonable agreement is observed after accounting for the difference in the average p T of particles produced in the two collision systems.

This Letter presents a measurement of the charge asymmetry in events where the top-quark pair is produced with a large invariant mass. The analysis is performed on 20.3 fb−1 of pp collision data at √s = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, using reconstruction techniques specifically designed for the decay topology of highly boosted top quarks. The charge asymmetry in a fiducial region with large invariant mass of the top-quark pair (mtt¯ > 0.75 TeV) and an absolute rapidity difference of the top and anti-top quark candidates within −2 < |yt| − |yt¯| < 2 is measured to be 4.2 ± 3.2%, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction at next-to-leading order. A differential measurement in three tt¯ mass bins is also presented.

The data used in the analysis were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $$sqrt{s}=7;{rm Te}{rm V}$$ and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $$4.6;{rm f}{{{rm b}}{-1}}$$. The measurement is performed by reconstructing the boosted W or Z bosons in single jets. The reconstructed jet mass is used to identify the W and Z bosons, and a jet substructure method based on energy cluster information in the jet centre-of-mass frame is used to suppress the large multi-jet background. The cross-section for events with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson, with transverse momentum $${{p}_{{rm T}}}gt 320;{rm Ge}{rm V}$$ and pseudorapidity $$ eta lt 1.9$$, is measured to be $${{sigma }_{W+Z}}=8.5pm 1.7$$ pb and is compared to next-to-leading-order calculations. The selected events are further used to study jet grooming techniques.

The underlying event is characterised through measurements of the average value of the sum of the transverse energy at large pseudorapidity downstream of one of the protons, which are reported here as a function of hard-scattering kinematic variables. The hard scattering is characterised by the average transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the two highest transverse momentum jets in the event. The dijet kinematics are used to estimate, on an event-by-event basis, the scaled longitudinal momenta of the hard-scattered partons in the target and projectile beam-protons moving toward and away from the region measuring transverse energy, respectively. Transverse energy production at large pseudorapidity is observed to decrease with a linear dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction in the target proton and to depend only weakly on that in the projectile proton. Lastly, the results are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, which qualitatively reproduce the trends observed in data but generally underpredict the overall level of transverse energymore » at forward pseudorapidity.« less

An integrated luminosity of $500$ $mu$b${-1}$ was accumulated in a special run with high-$beta{star}$ beam optics to measure the differential elastic cross section as a function of the Mandelstam momentum transfer variable $t$. The measurement is performed with the ALFA sub-detector of ATLAS. Using a fit to the differential elastic cross section in the $-t$ range from $0.014$ GeV$2$ to $0.1$ GeV$2$ to extrapolate $trightarrow 0$, the total cross section, $sigma_{mathrm{tot}}(pprightarrow X)$, is measured via the optical theorem to be: $sigma_{mathrm{tot}}(pprightarrow X) = {96.07} ; pm 0.18 ; ({{stat.}}) pm 0.85 ; ({{exp.}}) pm 0.31 ; ({extr.}) ; {mb} ;,$ where the first error is statistical, the second accounts for all experimental systematic uncertainties and the last is related to uncertainties in the extrapolation $trightarrow 0$. In addition, the slope of the exponential function describing the elastic cross section at small $t$ is determined to be $B = 19.74 pm 0.05 ; ({{stat.}}) pm 0.23 ; ({{syst.}}) ; {GeV}{-2}$.

The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 158 pb−1. The selection criteria demand the average transverse momentum of the two leading jets in an event to be larger than 250 GeV. The data at detector level are well described by Monte Carlo event generators. They are unfolded to the particle level and compared with theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-order accuracy. The agreement between data and theory is good and provides a precision test of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at large momentum transfers. From this comparison, the strong coupling constant given at the Z boson mass is determined to be αs(mZ ) = 0.1173 ± 0.0010 (exp.) +0.0065 −0.0026 (theo.).
